Eric Lim, software engineer in Auckland

1988 to 2004

From Korea to Auckland.

Born in Taebaek in 1988 and grew up in Samcheok, on Korea's east coast. At sixteen I moved to Auckland.

Auckland, 2004

2010 to 2014

Finding my thing.

After biomed and a year in retail, I switched to maths and statistics at the University of Auckland and earned first class honours.

Honours, statistics

Documents that edit both ways.

My honours project kept R Markdown and its HTML reports in sync, so edits in either flowed back to the other. It drew interest from AT&T's research labs.

Master's, computer science

Spotting attacks in the noise.

My master's detected network intrusions in the KDD Cup 1999 data, scoring each connection with LOF, then clustering the scores with DBSCAN.

2015 to 2018

Data first.

I started in data: map and time-series tools for iNZight, predictive models at the Centre for Social Data Analytics, then purchase patterns for McDonald's, IKEA and Jollibee.

2018 to 2023

Into the chain.

I built blockchain systems in Rust: a decentralised exchange at Centrality, then at Ajuna, after we won a Polkadot parachain auction, I launched our live parachains on Kusama and Polkadot.

2020 to 2024

Software people rely on.

I helped ship New Zealand's official Covid Pass, then led a digital trust service for a government agency. Before that, I built Xero's analytics event platform.

2024 to now

Building with AI.

I build AI products end to end: an agentic workflow builder at Onit, and clinical AI at IDEXX that turns vet consultations into structured records.

Still learning

How I keep learning.

Small projects where I practise the parts of the job that aren't code.
